CASE STUDY | BU ATHLETICS

Baylor University is a dominating presence in college athletics. With dozens of high-performing sports programs, stellar athletes, and a diverse student body, BU Bears are a force to be reckoned with across the nation.

In 2018, BU athletics announced a new mission statement, "One Standard. One Accord," and needed a rollout with a bang. BU's athletics team knew an article or social media post wouldn't be enough to garner the massive attention the values deserved, so that's where the animation entered the scene.

Baylor wanted to make noise, and that's precisely what we did. This animation cultivated an impactful environment and was an engaging way to get students, athletes, and fans alike on their feet.


The Mission.

Just like Baylor, this animation is strong, bold, and unapologetic. MCC wanted to capture Baylor's creativity, resilience, and diversity while keeping the values at the forefront. "What do we do?" and "how do we do it?" were questions MCC integrated into the animation storytelling.

 

The Design.

MCC designed the mission statement video from ground zero, using the strong BU identity as the backbone for the style. The intense pre-game video uses bold imagery, layered over textures and graphics, with stop-frame animation topped off with loud music that will bring anyone to their feet.

The Process.

This custom animation was born through mixed media photos (photography courtesy of BU), bold vector graphics, and glitching textures. Each scene is composed of a different sport, with illustrations of Patt Neff Hall mixed in along with heavy textures and collating. This style represents BU's tough and bold branding.

This scene depicts the four pillars of the Pat Neff Hall to bring emphasis to the four main values.

 

The Challenge.

BU wanted to release the animation at the first football home game of the season, and the animation needed to hit that fast-paced deadline. Together, we dialed into the process and completed two videos back-to-back in less than ten days for a successful stadium launch.

The Impact.

Since its launch, this animation has served BU athletics in various capacities, such as in-game stadiums hype videos, high-profile events, and recruiting material for the nineteen athletic programs. This video makes everyone–including opponents–wish they were Baylor Bears.
